THE REPRESENTATION OF THE EARTH

MAPS

  • Are flat representation of the Earth's surface.
  • Basis elements: scale and conventional signs.

SCALE

  • Indicates how many times the real area has been reduced to be able to represent it as an image.
  • Is represented in 2 ways: numeric and graphic scale.

CONVENTIONAL SIGNS

  • Is represented by symbols or colours.
  • Include shading in different colours, lines, points and different sizes.
  • The key is normally at the bottom of the map

LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE

To find the location of a person or place on the Earth, we can use a precise system of geographical coordinates.

Geograpical coordinates are based on imaginary horizontal and vertical lines that encircle The Earth called parallels and meridians.

Parallels

  • Encircle to the equator
  • Divides into two halves: northern and southern hemispheres.
  • Other parallels: Tropic Cancer, Trpic Capricorn, Artic Circle, Antartic Circle....

Meridians

  • Encircle to The Earth vertically.
  • Greenwich meridian divides into esatern and western

HOW TO FIND AN EXACT LOCATION ON THE EARTH

Latitude

Is the distance between a place and the equator, measured in degrees. Can be north or south.

Longitude

Is the distance between a place and the greenwich meridiam, measured in degrees. Can be east or west.
